Cross Community Church: A Foundation of Faith
In the heart of South Carolina's low country, Taylor Burgess and some faithful followers of Christ felt led to start something new. With 90% of Beaufort County's population classified as unchurched, a core group led by Taylor founded Cross Community Church in 2016.
A few years later, the church acquired land with the intention of constructing a building there. As Taylor describes, there were some challenges with their plan. “The property had low elevation and a high-water table; it’s also not far from a river and there were some soil issues as well. We knew it would take a creative solution to be able to build something solid on that property.”
The solution was to elevate the structure on timber pilings strengthened by concrete. The building, completed in 2023, stands on approximately sixty pilings each driven 60 feet into the earth. CDF Capital investors were able to provide the loan to make the vision reality.
While the deep pilings provide the building with stability, there’s a deeper, spiritual foundation that anchors Cross Community Church. Taylor observes, “Even though our building sits on all these timber pilings, our church doesn't ultimately sit on a foundation of concrete or timber. Cross Community has always been built upon the foundation of the solid rock of Jesus Christ.”
The church's remarkable growth—to over 800 members in just a few years—affirms the importance of both physical and spiritual foundation laying, to the bedrock of the Gospel itself.
The story of Cross Community meshes seamlessly with the hymn written in the 19th century by Samuel John Stone:
The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;
she is his new creation by water and the Word.
From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride;
with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.
