Serving God’s Kingdom, with a Smile

Dr. John Alley has been a dentist in California for 47 years. But his influence in the world of dentistry extends far beyond state borders. He has also worked as a missionary, setting up dental clinics in Nairobi, Kenya and Rosarito, Mexico.

Expertise to Help the Kingdom

John’s work in Africa started 11 years ago, while the clinic in Mexico began 8 years ago.

“I had the opportunity to establish the clinics and then to run them and see that they carried on,” John said. “I’m going to keep doing that for as long as I can.”

John’s work with missions organizations is about offering what he has to give, both in terms of his resources and his expertise. While he has a specialized skill to take to the mission field, John encourages all believers to use whatever they have been given to bless others.

“Other people can do similar things to help people through their areas of expertise in the name of the Kingdom,” said John.

John’s generous spirit does not come from his career as a dentist, though. It is embedded in his identity as a Christian.

Generosity: a Spiritual Discipline

“God instructs us to give generously,” John said. “The only way you can do that is if you’re wise with your money. It’s one of the main resources we have for helping other people. Spiritual growth is tied to giving in a lot of ways.”

John has been part of Eastside Christian Church in Anaheim, California for more than 40 years. He has been an elder for most of that time. As an elder, John gets to directly observe and participate in the ways Eastside follows God’s instruction to be generous.

“Being an elder gives me the chance to see exactly what Eastside is doing and where our resources are going,” he said.

John appreciates knowing that his church uses its resources wisely. It was through his church that he first discovered a unique opportunity to grow the Kingdom and his own portfolio.

“I was first introduced to CDF through Eastside Christian Church,” he said. “I think they got involved with CDF in the late ’70s. And I started investing with them 34 years ago.”

While other investment opportunities have the potential to earn higher interest rates, for John the ups and downs of those opportunities cannot compete with the benefits of investing in church loans.

“I’ve had a really good experience with CDF, and it’s always been consistent,” he said. “I’ve got some other investments that haven’t been so consistent, and I wish I’d taken that same money and put it in CDF.”

That is why when people talk to John about financial investments, CDF Capital always comes up.

“My son and his wife have invested a lot with CDF,” he said. “And when friends ask us about CDF, of course we always encourage them to invest.”

Whether it is through time, expertise, or resources, John continues to offer what he has for God’s glory. And his legacy can be seen from the growing churches across the country to the smiles of his dental patients around the world.
